Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Practice
-
Initial evaluations are typically a longer, 90-minute session that includes standardized assessments, parental interviews, clinical observation of play and motor skills, and more. Parent and child interviews are utilized to obtain extensive information regarding your specific concerns, difficulties your child presents with, what goals and objectives you wish to achieve through OT services, your child’s interests, and anything you’d like to share about your child that would assist with treatment.
Standardized testing is utilized for insurance reimbursement purposes, and to observe and provide concrete data on how your child’s development compares to their same-age peers. This typically involves assessment of gross, fine, and ocular/visual motor coordination skills, sensory integration questionnaires, emotional regulation questionnaires, assessment of primitive reflex patterns, and clinical observation of your child’s movement, emotional regulation, and play skills.
-
Treatment sessions typically begin as weekly, 45-minute long sessions that consist of individualized, play-based treatment directed at accomplishing and working towards your child’s specific therapy goals. Sessions typically begin with “body work”, hands-on techniques utilized to promote increased body awareness, overall regulation, and motor coordination skills. This is followed by games, stories, pretend-play, gym time, crafts, or any other play and relationship-based activities specifically required to aid your child in reaching their OT goals.
Each session ends with a discussion with parents regarding what we have done together during our session, how you can carry over techniques at home, and answering any questions or concerns you might have.

One huge way that families can help is by carrying over your therapist's recommendations to daily life. Whether it be through practicing certain movement patterns at home, relaying information to teachers and other providers, changing your language and communication with your child, or implementing daily routines/charts, it is important to continue what your child has learned over to the home setting. Consistency with attending weekly appointments is also a way to assist in promoting progress towards their therapy goals.
