Frequently Asked Questions About Occupational Therapy With Next Adventure

  • Speech-language therapy can improve communication skills, like speaking clearly, understanding and using words, and even working on social communication skills. It also helps with things like feeding, swallowing, oral myofunctional, and strengthening the muscles needed for speech, eating, and breathing.

  • Speech Therapy focuses on how we say sounds and words. This includes things like making sounds correctly or speaking smoothly.

    Language Therapy focuses on understanding and using words to express thoughts and ideas. It also helps with things like reading, writing, and even how we interact with others in conversations.

  • Oral myofunctional therapy is a treatment that focuses on retraining muscles of the mouth, face, and throat to establish proper oral resting posture to encourage nasal breathing patterns. We will also collaborate with other professionals, such as, airway centric dentists and ENTs should structural intervention be necessary!

  • People of all ages can benefit from speech-language therapy. While Next Adventure works with children primarily, we are open to seeing all ages!

    Areas we treat include: speech (articulation) skills, language skills (vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling, grammar, reading comprehension), augmentative and alternative communication (teaching and navigating use AAC devices for communication for nonspeaking or minimally speaking individuals) executive functioning  (working memory, problem-solving, reasoning, organizing thoughts and ideas, planning, time management, etc.), oral myofunctional (establishing nasal breathing patterns and oral resting posture), swallowing/feeding disorders (picky eating, safe feeding and drinking).

  • The duration of therapy varies depending on the client’s needs. We always talk with families about the plan of treatment and make changes as needed to make sure therapy is as effective as possible.

  • Every session is 45 minutes in length and is tailored to each client’s needs. During a session, we may do some bodywork, practice speech sounds through fun activities, play games, work on language skills through storytelling and conversation, work on social interactions with therapist and other peers (with parent permission), and/or work on oral motor function and oral muscle coordination for speech and feeding/swallowing.

  • The frequency of sessions depends on the needs of your child or family member. We usually start with once a week. Parents are welcome to join the sessions, but we might also suggest one-on-one sessions with just your child to help them feel more confident. We have a cozy waiting area where families can relax or families can run a quick errand while the session takes place. Please just be sure to come back about 5 minutes before the session ends for a quick chat about how things are going!
